NEWBURY — Interim Town Clerk Leslie Haley reports that no one has pulled nomination papers yet for the dozen or so open seats up for election. Prospective candidates have until March 20 at 5 p.m. to return nomination papers, which are available in the clerk's office, and must include at least 35 signatures from registered Newbury voters.
This year's town election falls on Tuesday, May 8, with voting at a new polling location for Precinct 1 at the Newbury Fire Station on Morgan Avenue and at the Newbury Library on Lunt Street for Precinct 2. Absentee ballot applications are available in the clerk's office as well, with a March 5 deadline to apply. The last day to register to vote or change party affiliations is Feb. 15 by 8 p.m.
The following offices are open for the spring election:
A three-year term on the Board of Assessors. Incumbent is F. N. "Budd" Kelley III.
A three-year term on the Board of Health. Incumbent is Elaine Byrne.
A four-year term as constable, Incumbent is Douglas Packer.
A three-year term as fish commissioner. Incumbent is Paul Thistlewood.
The Planning Board has an opening to fill an unexpired term until 2015 that is currently filled by John Weis, and one seat for a five-year term, currently held by incumbent Kathleen Pearson.
Two seats for three-year terms as selectmen. Incumbents Michael Bulgaris and Geoffrey Walker's terms will be completed on May 8.
A three-year term for town clerk. Incumbent is interim clerk Leslie Haley.
A one-year term for tree warden, where the incumbent is Peter Hollis.
A three-year term for Triton Regional School Committee member. Incumbent is Suzanne Densmore.
A three-year term as Trustees of the First Settlers Burial Ground. Incumbent is Richard Cunningham.
Two seats for three-year terms as library trustees. These positions are currently filled by incumbents Melissa Mashburn and Nancy Columbo.
A seat for a two-year unexpired term as library trustee, a position currently filled by Margaret Grimes.
