K-9 tracks down suspected car thief

SALEM N.H. —A Windham, N.H. man faces charges after he allegedly took a car without permission, then fled on foot after police tried to stop him.

William Szafran, 26, is charged with taking a Honda Civic from Royal Circle Thursday morning without the owner’s knowledge or permission, Deputy police Chief Shawn Patten said.

Police were called to the home at 11:30 Thursday morning for a report of a stolen car.

Detective Michael Bernard was talking to the car’s owner when she spotted her car driving past, a friend of her son at the wheel.

Bernard got into his cruiser and started to follow the Civic. He saw the suspect pull into a driveway, jump out of the car and run through back yards. Bernard ordered Szafran to stop, but he didn’t, Patten said.

Salem K-9 units responded to the scene and K-9 Til quickly tracked and stopped Szafran in the Alta Avenue area. He was taken into custody without further incident, police said.

Police discovered Szafran had a suspended driver’s license and at least two outstanding electronic bench warrants, one from Salem and one from Nashua. Both warrants were for traffic offenses, Patten said.

Now, Collier faces charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. driving after suspension, resisting arrest and the bench warrants.

His bail was set at $500 cash.
