Bank donates $75,000 to upgrade science programs

WEST NEWBURY — The elementary schools of the Pentucket Regional School District are receiving much-needed science equipment, thanks to a partnership between two local nonprofit foundations.

The Institution for Savings, through its charitable foundation, has donated $75,000 to the Pentucket Education Foundation (PEF) for upgrades to the science programs at the Dr. Elmer S. Bagnall School in Groveland, the Helen R. Donaghue School in Merrimac and the Dr. John C. Page School in West Newbury.

“Each of the schools had different needs ranging from constructing science labs to providing science equipment and iPads with specific science subscriptions. A true collaboration from teachers across the school district came together to build this grant request,” said PEF President Anna Marie Beech in a press release.

This is the largest donation generated by the partnership. The bank’s foundation awarded a $50,000 grant for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) improvements at the high school in June 2011 and $50,000 for the STEM program at the middle school in June 2012.

“This equipment will go a long way, as every year we see tremendous budget cuts to the technology line item and would not be able to improve without the support of partners such as the Institution for Savings,” said Beech.

Bank president and CEO Michael J. Jones believes there are few better investments a mutual bank can make in the community than to its schools.

“The bank began its commitment to Pentucket’s sciences programs several years ago, first with new equipment for the high school labs and last year by seeding the middle school robotics program. It just makes sense to make a similar commitment to the elementary schools because that is where students are first exposed to and become excited about science,” Jones said.
