On this day in 1842, the subscribers to the Oak Hill Cemetery Association bought the land from the estate belonging to the heirs of Moses Brown on the southeasterly side of what is now State Street. The land was purchased at the rate of $200 per acre for the establishment of a new cemetery in the manner and style of Mount Auburn Cemetery in Boston.
