---- — NEWBURYPORT — A small lighting company with operations in the CleanTech Center has been purchased by large public company.

The company that was purchased was Solais Lighting Inc., which designs and manufactures high-performing LED lamps and fixtures.

An LED lamp is a solid-state lamp that uses light-emitting diodes (LEDS) as a source of light, according to industry authorities. LED lamps offer long service life, and high-energy efficiencies, experts say.

It was purchased recently by PowerSecure International Inc., of Wake Forest, N.C., a provider of energy technologies to electric utilities and their customers.

Solais is headquartered in Stamford, Conn., and much of its design and testing takes place at the CleanTech Center in the business park here.

Chief Technology Officer Steve Johnson, based in Newburyport, said that the acquisition will be helpful to Solais.

“Becoming part of a large established company is good for us,” said Johnson.

“It demonstrates our viability in the market, and will help us as we approach large customers — they know we will be around if they decide to work with us.”

Johnson, a native of North Carolina, lives in Newburyport and indicated the technology development will remain here.

“We started in the CleanTech building, and that was very helpful because it offered space and amenities at a good rate,” he said.

Bob O’Brien, who runs the CleanTech center, said, “Solais Lighting was our first tenant company at the center in 2011.”

O’Brien indicated that the development of Solais has been an example of a start-up company getting the opportunity to develop its products so that it could become financially attractive to other companies.
