Committee to discuss regionalizing VA services

NEWBURYPORT — The City Council’s General Government Committee will meet tomorrow at 9:15 a.m. at City Hall to discuss regionalizing veterans services for the Greater Newburyport area.

The local leaders are calling for the communities of Newburyport, Amesbury, Newbury, Merrimac and Salisbury to work together to develop a central office for veterans affairs.

“Much of the (paperwork) has been done,” said Kevin Hunt, the veterans agent in Newburyport. “We are continuing with the details.”

The new office would have a budget of about $139,000 if finalized, Hunt said. All five communities would contribute.

Benefits of individual veterans would not be affected, he added.

The General Government Committee includes City Councilors Tom O’Brien and Dick Sullivan Jr., as well as Mayor Donna Holaday. However, the meeting has been posted as a “Committee of the Whole” in order for all city councilors to attend. The meeting at City Hall is open to the public.
