Historic tree restoration begins on town common

If you have driven by the town common ,you may have noticed it looks a little different. The tree restoration project has begun. Money from the town’s Community Preservation funds is paying for a historic restoration of the Rowley common to reflect the 1830-1960 era.

This project, for which the town has hired NEDP, LLC of Methuen for $37,400, is led by the Great Marsh Garden Club of Rowley. It includes a new landscape design that calls for removing 22 of the existing trees and stumps on the common and planting 33 new trees. The plan also includes funds to purchase watering devices and provide grading and reseeding of the disturbed areas.

Three tree species — linden, Morton elm, London planetree — will be used. Each adds its own special colors and unique leaf shapes to the common. All range in height from 30 to 75 feet and harken back to the earlier representation of what the area looked like.

The goal is to complete the restoration before the town’s 375th Rowley founding anniversary in the fall of 2014.

The first meeting of the Triton Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) will be held tonight at 6 at the library at the Newbury Elementary School.

The mission of SEPAC is to work for understanding of, respect for and support of all children with special needs in the community. SEPAC duties include advising the district on matters that pertain to the education and safety of students with disabilities, meeting with school officials, and participating in the planning, development and evaluation of the district’s special education programs.

Those interested in SEPAC and in need of more information, email or call 978-255-3167.

On Sunday, Sept. 22, the annual Antique Tractor Show will be at the weekly farmers market, complete with kid’s activities and games and live music. The market runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the town common.
