Merrimac's Santa Parade set for Dec. 1

By Elizabeth Rose

---- — MERRIMAC — The annual Santa Parade is scheduled to begin at 1p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1.

It will start at the Sweetsir School on Church Street and will travel toward Merrimac Square, where it will turn right onto W. Main Street. It will continue on W. Main Street to Union Street, where marchers will take a left and end at the Donaghue School.

A special float sponsored by Girl Scout Cadette Troop 66783, led by Jen Marden and Ellie Janelli, will collect non-perishable food and paper products. The girls will be accepting items to re-stock the cupboards of the Merrimac Senior Food Pantry and Amesbury’s Our Neighbors’ Table.

“The cupboards are very bare this time of year. The girls would like to say that if every person who watches the parade brought one package of crackers or other non-perishable items, think how quickly we could resupply the pantries,” Marden said.

Participants in this year’s parade includes horses, antique cars and decorated floats representing local businesses and service organizations. The parade will feature 10 bands including both the Pentucket Regional High School marching band and the Pentucket Regional High School percussion band. Bands from Georgetown High School, Middlesex County Fife and Drum, and North Andover High School will also be present.

In addition, the costumed characters of Micky and Minnie Mouse, Raggedy Ann and Elmo will attend the festivities, as well.

The Santa Parade committee includes Tom Jordan, Selma Gibbs, Julie Condon, Kathy and Bobby Judson, Bobby Judson Jr., Warren Clark, Ellen Miracle, Melissa Sampson, Arthur Amerault, Nancy Batchelder and Rich Holcroft.

The traditional Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the park located at the corner of W. Main Street and Union Street will follow the parade at 4:30 p.m.
