NEWBURYPORT — Jim Lonborg, former Boston Red Sox pitcher and 1967 Cy Young Award winner, will attend the second annual Newburyport Education Foundation Open on Monday, Sept. 27, at the Abenaqui Country Club, Rye, N.H.
Participants in the NEF Open will have the opportunity to raise money for Newburyport Public Schools. The NEF Open held last September raised $12,700.
Registration for this year's event is still open. The cost per golfer is $225 and includes buffet lunch, full access to practice facilities, on-course contests, dinner, awards, raffles and more. Prizes include a golf foursome at a number of area courses, a chance to win a Chevrolet Corvette and golf equipment. Spouses and non-golfers are also invited to join in the dinner for $55.
Lonborg is a former Major League Baseball right-handed starting pitcher who played with the Boston Red Sox (1965-71), Milwaukee Brewers (1972) and Philadelphia Phillies (1973-79). He was known as "Gentleman Jim" during his 15-year career for his fearlessness for pitching on the inside of the plate. He enjoyed his best year in the Carl Yastrzemski-led 1967 Red Sox's "Impossible Dream" season when he led American League pitchers in wins (22), games started (39) and strikeouts (246). That year, the Red Sox were involved in a four-way race for the American League pennant. The Cy Young Award is an honor given annually to the best pitchers in Major League Baseball.
Sponsorship opportunities are still available, including cart sponsor, dinner sponsor (or dinner co-sponsor), putting contest/green sponsor, and driving range sponsor. Hole sponsorships are also available. Last year, several Newburyport families chose to sponsor a hole for a $200 donation, and their children created the artwork displayed at the hole. Those interested in any of these sponsorship opportunities should contact the golf committee at golf@NewburyportEF.org, visit www.NewburyportEF.org or call 978-463-7893.

The mission of the Newburyport Education Foundation is to bring philanthropy into the Newburyport Public Schools and generate financial resources that will enhance the quality of public education throughout the school system. Formed to enhance educational opportunities for the city's public schoolchildren, the goal of the Newburyport Education Foundation is to supplement funding for programs that are already supported by public financing at a basic level, but which can be substantially improved by additional private sector financing, and to finance programs that might not receive funding from traditional sources, such as the district budget or state aid.
