NEWBURYPORT — Anna Jaques Hospital has won two major honors. Byron Matthews received the Massachusetts Hospital Association's Trustee Excellence in Leadership award, and Delia O'Connor has received the American College of Healthcare Executives Massachusetts Healthcare Executive of the Year Award.
Matthews, who served as Newburyport mayor during the height of the downtown's restoration, as been a member of the Anna Jaques Hospital Board of Trustees since 1991. He is credited with many accomplishments, among them:
leadership to help the hospital construct a new access road after 15 years of negotiation.
chairing and helping establish the hospital's Community Health Foundation in 1996. Since its inception, the foundation has raised more than $20 million to support the purchase of new technology, updated equipment and conduct key renovations in the hospital.
serving on the hospital's Building Committee of the board.
"His dedication to health care and to Anna Jaques Hospital in particular is both steadfast and unwavering," said O'Connor, president and CEO of Anna Jaques. "He consistently reminds everyone of the importance of working hard to preserve quality health care for our communities. Anna Jaques can count itself lucky that it ended up in the same city that produced Byron Matthews."
The Trustee Excellence in Leadership Award was created by the MHA to recognize high-performing board trustees who are engaged and committed, who have an in-depth knowledge of the health care field and a keen skill of working with their communities as a leading figure.
O'Connor awarded
O'Connor's award recognizes accomplishments that include a financial turnaround that has led to five consecutive years of profits from operations, construction of a Fast Track service in the emergency department that has decreased wait times for patients with minor injuries, dramatic improvements in patient satisfaction (as ranked by the national firm Press Ganey) and the successful completion of a medical office building on the campus of the hospital that attracted new and expanded physician practices and a cancer center.
Under her leadership, Anna Jaques has made significant advances as judged by the national firm, Thomson Reuters, on programs related to patient safety, reduced mortality, reduced complications and improved clinical "core measures."
O'Connor has served as president and chief executive officer of the hospital since 2005. Prior to that, she served as president of Caritas Norwood Hospital. O'Connor is also an active member of the Massachusetts Hospital Association, having served on several standing committees of the association, as well as being a current member of its Board of Trustees.
The Massachusetts Healthcare Executive of the Year Award recognizes ACHE affiliates who are experienced in the field and have significantly contributed toward the advancement of health care management excellence.
