Local boys lead Lego club at library

Rowley Town Notebook

Three self-named "Legoheads" led a Lego club for Rowley youth at the Rowley Public Library this summer as part of the library's summer reading program. Thirteen-year-old Frankie Herrick and Nathan Sabatini, who have been working on Lego creations together since preschool, approached library director Pamela Jacobson in April about offering the club at the library. Herrick and Sabatini had searched for a Lego club to participate in and found only adult groups that were costly, so they decided to make their own club opportunity.

"The Lego club transformed into the mega-jewel of Rowley Library's summer reading line-up," said Jacobson. "All summer long the phone rang off the hook about the Lego program and parent feedback repeatedly pointed to the Lego program as the place to be this summer in Rowley. One parent even said, 'We skip karate to come here and now my kid is reading!' We couldn't ask for better results."

Herrick and Sabatini were soon joined by their friend Christopher Beal in leading the program. Each of the boys have a different style for working with Legos: Sabatini is strictly "by the book," meaning he puts together the sets just as the directions indicate; Herrick is a "modifier," who can't help but change a piece or two while building a Lego set just to make it more interesting; and Beal is "an imaginator," who prefers to make up his own designs with Legos without following a plan.

The boys enjoyed a steady stream of participants every Tuesday for five weeks during the library's Lego club run, and all three boys shout a resounding "YES!" when asked if they'd like to lead the program again.
