NHS Class of '39 celebrates 70th anniversary

NEWBURYPORT — Fourteen members of the Newburyport High School Class of 1939 recently celebrated the 70th anniversary of their graduation with a luncheon at the Starboard Galley. An additional five family members and spouses also attended.

The fourteen classmates included seven currently from Newburyport: Marion Bothwell, Patricia (Curran) Messinger, Oscar C. Knight Jr., Shant G. Mantarian, Elaine (Holbrook) Murphy, Barbara (Walker) Nason and Alexios N. Terzis. Others living in Massachusetts were Dorothy (Donahue) Doughty of Merrimac and Evelyn (Sweeney) Dorr of Ipswich. Coming from New Hampshire were: George Chrisenton of Alton Bay, George W. Duffy and Margaret (Doyle) Duffy from Exeter, Norma (Sanborn) Soucy of Seabrook and from Florida, Anita (Chouinard) Shaw of New Smyrna Beach.

Following the luncheon, a spirited discussion on the subject of "missing classmates" took place. George Duffy explained how useful the Internet has become in finding addresses and telephone numbers to maintain his mailing list. It was agreed to convene again in 2010.
