Award-winning author/illustrator making holiday visit

Matt Tavares, an award-winning author and illustrator of such children’s book favorites as “Zachary’s Ball” and “Henry Aaron’s Dream” will visit the Rowley Public Library on Saturday, Dec. 8, from noon to 2 p.m. Tavares will read some of his holiday-themed works, demonstrate how he creates his illustrations and sign copies of his books. Children will be invited to decorate a fun gingerbread pirate. Sponsored by the Friends of the Rowley Library, the free event is open to the public. Call 978-948-2850 for more information.

Students from the Pine Grove School music and band departments will meet up with their counterparts from the Newbury and Salisbury elementary schools for the annual Winter Concert at Triton Regional High School on Thursday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. Admission is free and all are welcome.

The town is once again participating in the Toys for Tots program this holiday season. Donations of new, unwrapped gifts may be dropped off at the collection box at Town Hall until Thursday, Dec. 13.

People Helping People of St. Mary’s Parish in Rowley is now collecting donations for the Dec. 15 Christmas deliveries to those in need in Rowley, Georgetown, Boxford and Byfield. Donations of nonperishable foods, as well as paper, cleaning and personal hygiene products are needed. Additionally, grocery store gift cards and cash may also be donated. Donations can be dropped off at the St. Mary’s rectory in Georgetown at 94 Andover St. Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or in the designated bins before and after Masses at both the Rowley and Georgetown parishes. Members of the Friends of the Rowley Public Library are holding their first holiday basket raffle, with the winners to be drawn on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 1 p.m. at the library. More than $1,000 worth of goodies will be raffled off, including themed baskets that celebrate a holiday, contain the items to start a new hobby like yoga or gardening, or simply include delicious homemade treats. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and available at the library. Winners need not be present at the drawing, For more information, email baskets@rowleylibrary.org.
