---- — NEWBURYPORT — This weekend, the Newburyport Police Department will be holding its seventh annual “Fill A Cruiser” food drive to benefit those in need this holiday season.

The police will have trucks posted outside of the Shaw’s and Market Basket supermarkets on Storey Avenue tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents are encouraged to come down and donate nonperishable food items to help replenish the Salvation Army’s food pantry.

City Marshal Thomas Howard said the event has been a huge success in the past and he’s hoping for a similar turnout again this year. He added that cash donations will be accepted as well, and that shoppers can also purchase premade donation bags from both stores if they’d prefer. The premade bags will be available in different dominations.

“Both supermarkets have offered to do premade bags so that people aren’t searching for what they need,” Howard said. “The stuff that’s in the bags, we’ve worked with the Salvation Army to determine what their needs are so the bags are made to fit their needs for nonperishables.”

Last year, local residents helped fill up two police vans to the brim with thousands of nonperishable food items, along with more than $1,000 in donations.

“That’s a lot of food; people have really been very receptive to our efforts,” Howard said. “We ask once again that the public do their best to help us meet the needs of those in need around town.”
