Cookie Awards a nearly $2,000 treat for crisis center

NEWBURYPORT — West Newbury resident Julie Conover’s eighth annual Cookie Party raised almost $2,000 for the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center.

Conover’s annual fundraiser, complete with the “Golden Cookie Awards,” is not your traditional cookie swap. Each of her 40 guests were asked to come dressed in red carpet formal attire. They arrived with their cookie masterpieces and they also brought a $30 donation for the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center to commemorate the Newburyport-based agency’s 30th anniversary.

But much like a typical cookie swap, the more than 40 different kinds of cookies featured ranged in flavors and styles.

Guests voted on Best Store Bought, Best Presentation and Best Overall, with Dawn Marie Shay, owner of Plum Island Cookie Company, solely voting on the Best Taste entry.

Once the votes were tallied, prizes were awarded.

Pam Atwood of West Newbury won over Shay with her winning entry for Best Taste with her oatmeal raison cookies.

The Best Store-Bought Cookie was the raspberry-filled treats purchased at Greta’s Great Grains in Newburyport by Stephanie Conover of Newburyport.

Best Presentation went to Irene Mahoney of South Hampton and Jody Feudo of Groveland for their Naughty & Nice entry.

The prize for Best Overall was garnered by Kristin Flaherty and Jenn Kutner, both of West Newbury, for their Barbie Ski House creation.

All of the winners received a “Golden Cookie Award,” a gold statue holding a cookie that resembles the coveted Oscar Award.
