NEWBURYPORT — A New Hampshire woman was killed and another seriously injured on Interstate 95 north yesterday morning as a result of a two-car accident that started when a driver attempted to switch lanes, causing the victims' car to roll into the median, according to state police.
According to the preliminary investigation of the accident, police believe a 2005 Hyundai Accent driven by Shannon Jaques, 18, of Dover, N.H., and carrying Renee Sublette, also of Dover, was travelling in the left lane near the Newburyport/Newbury line at 11:15 a.m. when a 2010 Kia Soul attempted to move into the same lane.
The Hyundai lost control and rolled into the center median, ejecting Sublette from the vehicle and strewing debris across the grass.
Sublette, who police say was not wearing a seat belt, was rushed to Anna Jaques Hospital, where she was declared deceased. Jaques, who was wearing a seat belt, remains at Anna Jaques with serious injuries, according to police.
The driver of the Kia, identified as Stevenson Picard, 30, of Malden, was not injured.
Police shut down the left two lanes of I-95 following the accident for about two hours.
The facts and circumstances of the crash remain under investigation to determine whether charges are warranted, state police said in a statement.
