Escapee from women's facility caught on I-95

SALISBURY— An Everett woman has been sent back to prison in Framingham after escaping from the Essex County women's alternative correctional facility in Salisbury yesterday.

According to Essex County Sheriff's Department spokesman Paul Fleming, Laura Demetrio, 23, was found by the Essex County Apprehension Team shortly after she escaped from the Women In Transition rehabilitation facility on Route 110 by jumping out a window.

"At about 11:20 (yesterday) morning it was noticed that she was missing from Women In Transition," Fleming said. "She was re-apprehended at about noontime in a cab heading south on Interstate 95, not far from the Route 1 exit. She was sent back to MCI-Framingham. She's violated the opportunity to rehabilitate herself through the Women In Transition program."

The Women in Transition program is a prerelease facility that serves 24 women who have committed nonviolent offenses who have drug and alcohol addictions.

According to Salisbury police Chief David L'Esperance, the department was called and told by Women In Transition personnel that the woman had jumped out a window to escape. Although Salisbury police responded to do a search of the area, L'Esperance said they didn't find the woman and turned the case over to the Sheriff Department's apprehension team.

Fleming said members of the team were able to move quickly, working from information they developed that led them to look for Demetrio in a cab on I-95.

Demetrio had arrived at WIT on Tuesday from MCI-Framingham, where she was serving a six-month sentence for possession of class B and class E substances. Had she not attempted to escape, her parole eligibility date would have been Dec. 3, Fleming said. If she served her out her six-month sentence, she would have been released on March 22.

Asked if Demetrio faces further charges due to the escape, Fleming said, that normally in cases such as this, the individual is charged with escape.

"Any addition to her sentence would be at the judge's discretion, which can fluctuate from six months to two years," Fleming said.
