Play teaches students all about food

Seabrook School Notes

The students at Seabrook Elementary School, in preschool through fifth grade, recently enjoyed the performance of the Emmy Award-winning play " Foodplay." With its cast of colorful characters, fantastic feats of juggling, motivating messages, music, magic and audience participation, "Foodplay" captivated students while they learned how to treat their bodies with healthy eating and active lifestyles.

In that regard, students in Stacy Godin's third-grade class used fruit to make healthy food creatures as a result of the "Foodplay" presentation, according to student reporter Ashley Saalfield. Banana snakes, pineapple mice and a variety of other strange-looking creatures were the result, and the class plans a cookbook in the near future to show others how to create fun food creatures.

Allison DeCicco's preschoolers learned how to carve jack-o'-lanterns during the Halloween season. They also used their logic skills to report on how apples and pumpkins are alike: They both have seeds, can be eaten and picked, both are circles and both have stems.

With Thanksgiving and the holiday season approaching, students have begun their annual Food Drive, which will continue until Nov. 20. Canned foods and nonperishable items are collected for the needy and can be dropped off at the Seabrook Elementary School Library. All donations will be sent to the Seacoast Community Action Program, located on Route 1 in Seabrook.

Donated foods will be used to help fill some of the many hundreds of food baskets distributed to the less fortunate in the community and help brighten their holiday. Donated items will also be used in the food pantry, which supplies food year-round to those in need.

This year, City Year and the Seabrook Middle School Student Leadership will help transport the many boxes of food collected to Community Action. Special thanks to the Camusos, the family that organizes the drive every year.
