CONCORD, N.H. — At 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, the emergency siren at the Seabrook nuclear power plant will be set off as a demonstration, in cooperation with the plant's owners, the New Hampshire Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency.
According to Jim Van Dongan of the New Hampshire Department of Safety, the siren activation will consist of two different tones over a 3- to 5-minute period.
The sirens are part of the warning system in case of an emergency at Seabrook Station, the 1,245-mega watt nuclear power plant owned by NextEra Energy Resources LLC and located in Seabrook.
The sirens are designed to provide an outdoor warning signal. There are 121 sirens in the Seabrook emergency siren system, 94 of which are in New Hampshire, with 27 in Massachusetts.
In an actual emergency the sirens would be the signal for people to tune to radio or television news to find out what is happening and for emergency information.
Residents in Seabrook Station's Emergency Planning Zone will be mailed a reminder about the siren demonstration. The zone includes of 17 Rockingham County communities in New Hampshire and six towns in Massachusetts.
Seabrook Station shut down on Oct. 1 for refueling and is ramping up to go back online.
