Georgetown senior activities

Blood pressure clinic Dec. 2: Public Health Nurse Judy Anderson will be available to take blood pressure, check blood glucose levels and discuss medical concerns with elders Wednesday, Dec. 2, 10-11 a.m., at the First Congregational Church.

Computer program resumes: The Council on Aging and Georgetown School Department report that computer classes will resume Wednesday, Dec. 2, 3:15 p.m. at the Penn Brook School. Taught by Penn Brook School technology teacher Marianne Fravel, a series of four computer classes will include classes on word processing and e-mail. Word processing classes will provide instruction on copy, paste, insert and formatting text. Classes will be held Wednesdays Dec. 2, Dec. 16, Jan. 6 and Jan. 23, at the Penn Brook School computer lab. To register for the classes, call the COA office.

Dr. Afridi to speak at Men's Breakfast: Discussing "Exercise, Weight Control and Diet," Dr. Nadeem Afridi of Clipper Cardiovascular Associates in Newburyport will be the guest speaker at the Men's Breakfast Thursday, Dec. 3, 9:30 a.m. The Council on Aging thanks Crosby's Markets for their sponsorship and the Georgetown Housing Authority for their partnership in offering the monthly program. To make reservations, call the COA office.

Holiday Concert and Breakfast Dec. 4: The Georgetown Middle/High School will host a Holiday Breakfast and Concert for elders Friday, Dec. 4 at the middle/high school. The breakfast is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. and the concert will follow at 9 a.m.

SHINE office hours Dec. 7: SHINE Counselor Jerry Goldberg will be available to answer health insurance questions Monday, Dec. 7, 9-11:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church.

ESMV office hours Dec. 7: Elder Services of Merrimack Valley case manager Jenn Cook will be available to answer questions regarding ESMV programs and services Monday, Dec. 7, 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church.

Garden Club craft Dec. 7: The Georgetown Country Gardeners will offer a Christmas centerpiece activity Monday, Dec. 7, 9:30 a.m., at the First Congregational Church. RSVP by calling the COA office.

Elder abuse program Dec. 8: The Elder Justice Network of the Greater North Shore will present an informational program on elder abuse Tuesday, Dec. 8, 10 a.m., at the First Congregational Church. The program will include information about the different forms that elder abuse can take including physical, financial exploitation, emotional and self-neglect. The program will also provide information regarding the warning signs of elder abuse as well as ways to help if elder abuse is suspected.

Annual holiday party Dec. 9: The Council on Aging and Housing Authority will host the annual holiday party Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2-4 p.m., at Trestle Way. With limited seating, reservations are necessary by Wednesday, Dec. 2. To make reservations, call the COA office.

Greg Curtis to perform Dec. 15: In celebration of the season, join us for a morning of holiday music and American standards as we welcome back Greg Curtis for a performance Tuesday, Dec. 15, 10 a.m., at the First Congregational Church. Lunch follows ($2 with reservations required). Light refreshments will be served before lunch. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Georgetown Cultural Council, a local agency that is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. To assist the COA in planning for the event, call the COA office.

Monthly Birthday Dec. 15: Join us on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 11:30 a.m.. for the COA Monthly Birthday celebration. December birthday celebrants will receive a free lunch (everyone else is $2). To make reservations, call the COA office at 978-352-5726 by Dec. 9.

Christmas Cabaret Dec. 22: Join us for a morning of holiday music with pianist Chandler Noyes and guest vocalists on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 10 a.m. The morning will include sing-along favorites and light refreshments. If planning to attend, call the COA office.

Holiday/New Year discussion group Dec. 29: Join us for a look back at the memories of 2009 as we look forward to the New Year with a holiday discussion group Tuesday, Dec. 29, 10 a.m., at the First Congregational Church. Bring photos, stories and/or a list of New Year's resolutions. Those planning to attend should call the COA office.

Property Tax Incentive Program: The Property Tax Incentive Program will be available to Georgetown residents 60 years and older again this year. The program will run Jan. 1-Oct. 31. The program currently permits elders to reduce their property taxes by $500 per calendar year in exchange for 62 hours of volunteer service to the town. Application forms and guidelines are available in December at the Council on Aging. Applications must be returned to the COA by Wednesday, Dec. 30.

Indoor Walking Program underway: In partnership with the Georgetown School Department, a new indoor walking program is underway Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:30-6 p.m., at the Penn Brook School on Elm Street. Walkers will be asked to sign in upon arrival and sign out as they leave the school.

Weekly COA exercise programs underway: In partnership with the Georgetown Housing Authority, the Georgetown COA offers weekly exercise programs at Trestle Way Community Room. Yoga classes are held at Mondays at 10:30 a.m. and Wednesdays at 9 a.m. Strength Training classes are held at Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 11 a.m. A donation of $3 is suggested per class.

Updates to newsletter mailing list: As the Georgetown COA updates the newsletter mailing list to comply with new U.S. Postal Service regulations, some addresses have been eliminated from the COA newsletter mailing list. If you no longer receive the COA newsletter and would like to be added back to the newsletter mailing list, call the COA office.
