AMESBURY — The kids who wait every day for the school bus to pick them up in front of the Macy Terrace Family Housing development on Macy Street will no longer have to wait in the rain to catch a ride to school.
Thanks to a gift from the town, and to the effort of the Amesbury Housing Authority and Amesbury Lions Club, a new shelter has been installed at the Route 110 bus stop and is providing a welcome respite for the kids from inclement weather, just in time for winter.
"With the winter soon upon us, I am thrilled that we could finally bring this shelter out of storage and put it to good use for our parents and kids who must wait for school buses on Route 110," said Bob Mazzone, executive director of AHA, who has been seeking ways to add a shelter to at the stop for years. "Under our current budget constraints, we could not have afforded this improvement. We are very grateful to the town of Amesbury and Lions Club for their assistance in making this goal a reality."
The bus shelter is another welcome change along the same throughway that recently saw improvements to the sidewalks and road, adding a pedestrian-friendly element to the overall environment in that location. For the kids who live in that area and have spent many mornings exposed to the elements before they start their school day, it provides a safe waiting area set back from the busy state road.
With continued reductions in assistance from the commonwealth, the addition of a nonessential structure like a bus shelter didn't seem like a possibility this year, Mazzone said, so he and families who use the structure were happy the town stepped forward to purchase the structure. The Amesbury Lions Club assisted AHA staff with the installation.
