Polls for Senate primary open at 7

Today, Massachusetts residents will go to the polls to vote in the Democratic and Republican primaries for U.S. Senate.

Democratic candidates include Attorney General Martha Coakley, Congressman Michael Capuano, City Year co-founder Alan Khazei and Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca.

State Sen. Scott Brown and attorney and businessman Jack E. Robinson are competing for the Republican nomination.

The outcome of the primary will determine which Democratic and Republican candidate will run against each other in the Jan. 19 special election. The winner will take the U.S. Senate seat once held by the late Edward M. Kennedy.

Since August, the seat has been held by interim appointee Paul Kirk, a longtime Kennedy aide who opted not to run for election to complete the term.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
