WEST NEWBURY — West Newbury police have taken out charges against the man who police say led a chase through the Greater Newburyport region Thanksgiving night.
Following charges filed by Newburyport police last week, West Newbury yesterday filed charges against William Yates, 50, of 600 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, N.H. Charges include driving after license suspension, number plate violation to conceal identity, negligent driving, marked lanes violation, failure to stop for police, speeding in a special regulation zone, passing violation, failure to keep right on a hill or area with obstructed view, larceny of a vehicle and receiving stolen property under $250.
Yesterday, West Newbury police issued a summons for Yates, who is being held in New Hampshire.
Police say the crime spree started in Maine on Thanksgiving Day and led to a police chase and manhunt in Newburyport Thanksgiving night. It ended a couple of days later after police say they caught Yates in a pizza delivery man's car he stole in New Hampshire.
Police say Yates jumped from one stolen car to the next — including one he took from a disabled Newburyport man — stole cell phones, some prescription drugs and led police on two chases. He's being held in New Hampshire, but police hope to have him back in Massachusetts soon to face charges.
Last week, Newburyport police received an arrest warrant for Yates on the following charges: felony unarmed burglary, felony larceny over $250, receiving stolen property under $250, felony larceny of a motor vehicle, felony receiving stolen property (motor vehicle), reckless operation, failure to stop for police, failure to stop for a red light, excessive speed. Yates was also charged by Epping, N.H., police and Chester, N.H., police.
Yates was also charged by Wakefield, N.H., police in a robbery. Yates is now being held without bail pending a hearing on Dec. 21 on the Wakefield charges.
