SEABROOK — Starting Tuesday, Jan. 5, needy households in town will have one more option to help them make it through the week. Volunteers from Seabrook Community Table will add a third night to its free meal program at Trinity United Church Parish House.
It's been almost a year since Seabrook Community Table volunteers set up a program that offered free dinners every Monday and Thursday evening at Seabrook's Church of Christ, which donated its kitchen and dining area to the program.
The enormous success of the program has been amazing, according to Seabrook Community Table coordinator Joyce Addison. Volunteers from the schools, churches, the town, local organizations and businesses stepped up to the plate, banding together in teams, signing up on a schedule to supply the food, cook, serve and clean up on a regular basis.
Other local businesses have donated food and supplies.
With need growing and the generosity of Trinity United Church, Tuesday night will join the rotation. Trinity Parish House is located across from Seabrook Town Hall on Route 1, right before entering the rotary.
"It's an awesome building," Addison said. "There's no stairs, lots of windows and easy to get to. We will be gearing Tuesday evening meals to kids and will be offering not only free, home-cooked meals but also kids' activities."
Volunteers and donations of food, supplies and cash are always needed to keep the program working, Addison said.
Seabrook's workforce was hit hard by the recession, posting unemployment rates at above 10 percent for about a year.
Seabrook Community Table was a response to the problem, hoping to help residents stretch their food budget by supplying a free evening meal a few nights a week. Meals are served from 5 to 6 p.m.
