Humans work like dogs in this race

NEWBURYPORT —Now's the time to start planning your team for the second annual Human Dog Sled Race. The race returns for its second year at the Newburyport Winter Carnival on Saturday, Jan. 23.

The race features teams of five or fewer people, consisting of one driver and human "sled dogs" racing across the frozen pond at the Bartlet Mall. Teams will provide their own sled and rope for attaching the sled to the dog team. Costumes and sled décor are recommended but not required. The race will be judged purely upon speed, and the winning team will receive a prize.

"We had a great inaugural race last year, with several teams of young people competing," said event organizer Lisô Reid.

Organizers hope to attract more teams this year, including adult teams representing local community groups and businesses. Race entry is free.

"The goal is to create a fun annual tradition similar to Yankee Homecoming's bed races," Reid said.
