NHS hockey player arrested on drug charges

NEWBURYPORT — A Newburyport High School senior and a captain of the varsity hockey team will be arraigned tomorrow in district court following his arrest Friday on drug charges.

Cooper H. Hines, 17, of 25 Frances Drive, will be arraigned on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, a school zone violation and a marked lanes violation.

Hamilton police arrested Hines on Highland Street following a motor vehicle stop. He was released on $1,000 cash bail and will be arraigned at Ipswich District Court in Newburyport.

There were juveniles in the car with Hines, but they were not arrested, Hamilton police said.

Newburyport Superintendent Marc Kerble said he feels bad about the incident and he hopes for the best for Hines, but "there will be consequences."

Hines did not play in Monday's tournament hockey game against Bishop Fenwick.
