Kemper to run for selectman or assessor

WEST NEWBURY — Glenn Kemper pulled nomination papers last Friday to fill spots on the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Assessors. When reached over the weekend Kemper, a former selectman who lost his seat to Bert Knowles last May, said he is running again because he believes he has the qualities necessary to successfully handle either position and "something positive to give to the town."

According to town bylaws, Kemper may not serve on both boards simultaneously. He said as the election season progresses, he will make a decision which post he will run for.

Kristi Devine is also circulating papers for the selectmen's seat currently held by Tom Atwood. The incumbent has not yet announced whether he will seek another three-year term.

Others currently circulating papers include Jill Eichhorst, Pentucket Regional School Committee; Scott Berkenbush, Elizabeth Torrissi and Virginia Selman, three seats on the Board of Library Trustees; and Thomas Flaherty, Park and Recreation Commission.

Marge Peterson, Housing Authority; Robert Janes, Board of Health, and Larry Corcoran, Board of Water Commissioners, have returned nomination papers.

Victor Gangi of the Board of Assessors is not seeking another three-year term, and Arthur "Chip" Wallace is stepping down from his five-year seat on the Planning Board.

Town Moderator Kathleen "KC" Swallow has not yet signaled whether she plans seek another term.

The last day to return signed nomination papers for the May 7 town election is March 16.
