AMESBURY — Since 1910, the Boy Scouts of America have called upon the boys and young men of this country to help their local communities. Scouts learn about local forms of government, honor those in the armed services and help the community when there is a need.
One way Scouting in Amesbury looks to support its local community is to collect food for local families. Last year, the Scouts from Amesbury Packs 4 and 7 and Troops 4 and 7 filled the basement of Our Neighbors' Table storehouse. In addition to all of the food donated, Pack 4 provided 14 local families with Thanksgiving dinners in a basket.
The boys from Pack 4 were given a description of a family — age and number of children, if any, and they designed and filled a basket to be delivered by Community Action to a local family. This year Our Neighbors' Table is seeing even more people in need.
The Scouts' goal this year is to fill every available space at ONT with food before winter sets in. This year, the local Scouts from Cub Scout Packs 4 and 7, and Boy Scout Troops 4 and 7 will be Scouting for food Nov. 6 and 13.
The Scouts will distribute "hang tags" to homes in Amesbury the morning of Nov. 6. Residents can fill a bag with nonperishable items and leave it outside the door Nov. 13 by 9 a.m.
The Scouts will canvass the town looking for bags to collect. All of the bags should be collected by 1 p.m. Additional bags are welcome; all food set out will be picked up. If you wish to donate but cannot leave a bag for pickup, the bag can be dropped off at Market Street Baptist Church from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 13. The rain date is the afternoon of Nov. 14.
Our Neighbors' Table requests the following most-needed items: canned beef stew, canned soup (especially chunky soups, chicken noodle and tomato), pasta (spaghetti, macaroni, penne, etc.), canned ravioli, baked beans, cereal, oatmeal (regular and instant), personal-care items (bar soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste), toilet paper, juice (large cans, plastic bottles or juice boxes — no glass, please), canned pasta sauce and canned fruit. Please checks the expiration dates, as expired food cannot be given out.
If you do not receive a hang tag, or if by 1 p.m. the bag is not picked up, please contact Cub master Anders Lund at Amesbury_pack_4@yahoo.com or call 978-697-6957.
