---- — NEWBURY — Residents are invited to a public workshop to learn about and give input into a bylaw to regulate medical marijuana facilities in town. The event is slated for Saturday, Jan. 25, at 10 a.m. at the Town Hall, 25 High Road; refreshments will be served. Workshop participants will discuss where and how to site a facility, including both retail and cultivation operations.
In November of 2012 Massachusetts voters overwhelmingly approved “An Act for the Humanitarian Medical Use of Marijuana.” At the Special Town Meeting last October, voters enacted a moratorium on the use of land or structures for registered marijuana dispensaries and related uses in order to allow the town time to develop appropriate regulations. This moratorium is in effect through Dec. 31.
The workshop opens with a presentation by the Planning Board and town planner Martha Taylor on the state law and related regulations announced by the Department of Public Health last spring. Following the presentation, audience members may ask questions and express any concerns that they may have regarding the siting of medical marijuana facilities. The Planning Board’s goal is to develop a bylaw for consideration at the Annual Town Meeting in May.
