There's a new place to buy sandwiches and soups on Liberty Street.
The Green Bean Deli opened its doors last Tuesday.
Owners Mark Stevens and Kimberly Genaw said they had been looking to open a shop when the space that housed Boston Chowda Co. became available. The couple live in Chelmsford.
"We came here and fell in love with the town," Genaw said. While Newburyport has lots of pizza and sub shops, a deli offering healthy, natural, organic meals made with locally grown ingredients was needed, she said.
The deli offers sandwiches, combo meals, soups and chili, a baked potato bar and sides, including a fruit medley and vegetable medley. It also has breakfast sandwiches and breakfast calzones.
"Everything is made by us," Genaw said.

Mayor Donna Holaday has scheduled a community-wide public forum for Saturday, March 6 at the High School from 9 a.m. to noon. Citizens are invited to attend to voice concerns and ask questions of Holaday, department heads and city officials.

With Harbormaster Ralph Steele set to retire in April, Holaday said last week she wants to meet soon with Amesbury Mayor Thatcher Kezer and Salisbury Town Manager Neil Harrington to discuss options for the position and how other communities use the position.
Holaday said she is unlikely to look at placing the harbormaster services under the police department.
"I don't think I would put harbormaster under police," she said.
The three communities have been seeking to share, or regionalize, services.

The Mass. Department of Transportation has scheduled a public meeting on the Whittier Bridge replacement project Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Amesbury Town Hall Auditorium, 62 Friend St.

Opportunity Works is now accepting donations for the 26th annual "Lend-a-Hand Auction." The auction, which is the agency's largest fundraiser, is on Saturday, Feb. 20.
Items such as sports tickets and memorabilia, sporting goods, clothing, concert tickets, furniture, jewelry, original artwork, getaway vacations, giftware, appliances, techno gadgets such as I-pods, docking stations, DVD players, and TVs, would be appreciated, Lisa Sutton, the business development coordinator, said last week.
