BYFIELD – Kimberly Croteau, the Title 1 director for the Triton regional schools, has been tapped to become the district’s new chief academic officer.
Croteau will replace Kate Carbone, who will leave the district next month to take a position in the Salem school district.
Superintendent Christopher Farmer said the district received 17 applications for the position, six of whom were interviewed by three panels comprised of teachers, parents and administrators.
The chief academic officer position was created in 2010 to oversee the curriculum and teaching aspects for Triton and is responsible for leading the development of curriculum, instruction and assessment for children in preschool through grade 12. Additionally, the responsibilities include oversight of the district’s professional development program.
In addition to being the district’s Title 1 director, Croteau is a member of the Teaching and Learning Leadership Team and also serves as a literacy specialist and coach at Salisbury Elementary School, where she has taught for the past eight years.
Her previous experience includes seven years as an elementary school teacher, five of them at Newbury Elementary School. Prior to joining the staff in Salisbury, Croteau served for four years as a practicum supervisor of teachers in training with Salem State University.
Farmer said that the district was fortunate to have such a strong candidate in the district.
“Kim Croteau demonstrates a deep understanding of quality teaching, which is independent of subject areas, and is an experienced and highly regarded trainer of teachers,” he said. “Her passion and attention to detail in seeking to make the best research-based and most appropriate education available to all students is compelling. I look forward to working with her in her new role.”
Transitional arrangements are now being made to provide for continuity within the Salisbury Elementary School when Croteau leaves, while at the same time securing time for Croteau to work with Carbone before she assumes her new position as assistant superintendent for the Salem Public Schools in mid-November.
Croteau holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from UMass Amherst and master’s degrees in both elementary education and reading from Salem State University. She also is a Wilson program teacher-trainer, and is certified as a Keys To Literacy coach.
