Shoes drive making tracks to Nepal

Newburyport Daily News

---- — NEWBURYPORT — The Rotary Club is seeking donations of shoes to be sent to residents of Nepal.

Shoes and sneakers that are “gently used” can be dropped off in a labeled bin on the first floor of City Hall. There is also a bin at Newburyport High School.

Footwear will be sent to the village of Khumjung in the Mt. Everest region of Nepal, which is home to about 8,000. The village is about 12,500 feet above sea level.

Rotary member Walt Thompson said the shoe-gathering initiative was launched after a summer visitor, Pema Dorje Sherpa of Khumjung, spent time in Newburyport and asked for shoes for his village.
