This Day in History

Newburyport Daily News

---- — On this day in 1804, James Akin, an engraver, advertised his talents for printing banknotes. He stated that, “Specimens may be seen in his possession which will testify his abilities, and more particularly in Bank Work, having executed the business for several Banks in the Southern states; he therefore, solicits the attention of the Banks in New England, as there appears at present to exist a want for the security of bills.”

Akin would engrave anything from maps, children’s primers, cartoons and paper currency.
