---- — NEWBURY — The Newbury Town Library, 0 Lunt St., will offer the following programs in May:

Lantern-making workshops

In anticipation for the big concert and lantern parade on Saturday, May 11, come on down to one of these lantern-making workshops. All ages welcome. Supplies will be provided.

Wednesday, May 1, at 10:30 a.m., Newbury Town Library

Thursday, May 2, at 4 p.m., PITA Hall, Plum Island

Music & Light: Newbury Town Library Lantern Festival

Saturday, May 11, 6-8 p.m., Newbury’s Upper Green

The Newbury Town Library invites the entire town to come celebrate music and light at a free concert and lantern parade. Pack a picnic, bring some friends and enjoy the music of Karen K and the Jitterbugs and Zach Field High School Steel Drum Ensemble. The group will parade around the Green with the hand-made lanterns.

Memoir writing workshop

Wednesdays, May 1-June 5, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Thinking about writing your memoir? Come to this six-week workshop to help you get started. No prior writing experience is necessary. Seats are limited, so please register in advance by calling the library at 978-465-0539.

Family yoga

Wednesday, May 8, at 1 p.m.

Roots to Wings Yoga will offer a free family yoga class at the library for children aged 3-6 years and their caregivers. Come in comfy clothes. This class will occur on a monthly basis. Register in advance at 978-465-0539.

Crafternoon with Rani

Wednesday, May 15, at 1:30 p.m.

Learn to make a fun seasonal craft with the craft-maven, Rani MacNeal. Supplies will be provided by the Friends of the Library for this free class. All ages are welcome and some caregiver participation and help will be required. Register at 978-465-0539 as space will be limited. This class will occur on a

monthly basis.

Honduras: Copan and Pico Bonito

Thursday, May 16, at 6:30 p.m.

Bill Gette, sanctuary director of Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, will show photographs of the exquisite flowers, brilliantly colored birds and rainforest mammals that he and his group encountered on their trip in March 2012. They visited the world-famous Mayan archeological site of Copan, explored the tropical rainforests at Pico Bonito National Park and took a narrow gauge railway into Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge. No registration necessary for this free program.

Annual Plant and Bake Sale fundraiser

Saturday, May 18, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The Friends of the Library are hosting a Plant and Bake Sale. All proceeds go directly to the Friends of the Newbury Town Library, a volunteer organization primarily interested in raising funds to support the Newbury Town Library. Creative movement

Wednesday, May 22, at 11:45 a.m.

Dance teacher Julie Edmond is offering a free creative movement class for children aged 3-5 years. Parents are encouraged to drop then off for the 45-minute class. This is a great introduction to dance and movement. This class will occur on a monthly basis. Please register in advance.

Do Drop-in! Playgroup

Every Thursday from May 9 to June 20 from 10:30 a.m.-noon

It’s a little like a playgroup, a little like a library visit and a whole lot of fun. Miss Olivia welcomes children of all ages to come play at the library, on the playground and inside with our toys, crafts and books. A chance to meet new friends, reconnect with some old, burn some energy and cool down, all at once. Snacks are allowed in the large meeting room. All ages with caregivers. No enrollment necessary.

Simple & Sweet Story Time

Every Friday from May 10 to June 21 from 11:30 a.m.-noon and 1:30-2 p.m.

Bringing back classic story time, Miss Olivia leads the group through some song and dance, as well as a few of her favorite read-alouds, appropriate for the very young and their siblings and friends. Registration is required. Please call the library at 978-465-0539 or stop in to sign up. Ages 0-4 with caregivers. Registration is required. Register for one class only.

FRIENDS OF NEWBURY TOWN LIBRARY

Are you interested in helping out the library? Do you enjoy fundraising? Meeting new people? Come join the Friends. The Friends are a nonprofit group that sponsors library programs, museum passes, etc. This great group of people is looking for a few more members to serve on their executive board.
