Newbury man struck by wrong-way driver

NEWBURY -- A local truck driver was slightly injured yesterday morning after his tractor-trailer was struck by a pick-up truck heading the wrong on Route 125 in Brentwood, N.H.

William Valpone, 45, of Newbury, was treated at the scene after a 2000 Ford Ranger traveling southbound crossed into the northbound travel lanes and collided with Valpone’s 1986 Freightliner truck around 7:17 a.m., according to New Hampshire State Police.

The driver of the pick-up truck, Michael Starkey, 50, of Rochester, N.H., sustained serious injuries as a result of collision. He was transported to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston via medical helicopter. Route 125, which intersects Route 101 and Route 111A, was closed for about three hours as state police conducted an investigation.

State police were assisted by area police and fire departments, as well as the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department, and the New Hampshire State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit.

The accident remains under investigation by Trooper Michael Shupe, NH State Police-Troop A. Anyone with information pertaining to this accident is asked to contact Shupe at 603-223-8490.
