Former West Newbury man charged in sexual assault of child

WEST NEWBURY — A former West Newbury resident has been charged with three counts of sexual assault of a child and is expected to be arraigned Monday at Newburyport District Court.

John Buzzell, 47, now of Newton, N.H., was charged May 2 on three counts of indecent assault and battery of a child under 14 stemming from incidents taking place between July 2011 and December 2012, according to West Newbury police.

Danielle Burrill, the department’s sexual assault investigator, said police were notified Feb. 28, by Essex County Assistant District Attorney Michelle Belmonte, of the alleged assaults that took place inside a West Newbury residence.

Burrill, who has been with the department since 2003, declined to comment on the specific nature of the charges, but said that there was no rape.

Burrill said the victim and Buzzell were acquaintances before the alleged incidents, adding this was not a case of Buzzell contacting his victim via the Internet.
