City offers free boat inspection Saturday

Newburyport Daily News

---- — NEWBURYPORT — City marine officials will conduct a free inspection of boats Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the municipal dock in front of the harbormaster’s office.

The inspection is designed to alert boaters to safety deficiencies on their vessels, from failed running lights to a shortage of life jackets.

“It’s a free service and there are no fines involved if the boats are lacking,” said Paul Hogg, harbormaster. “Especially with boats that are out on the water for the first time this season, there is often equipment that must be updated.”

No appointment is necessary for the inspection, which will be conducted in part by members of the Coast Guard auxiliary.

Hogg added that he is looking to hire lifeguards for the summer, and he will be interviewing and testing candidates in coming days.
