Film company eyes Salisbury for movie location

---- — SALISBURY — Residents will have to wait a couple of weeks until they know for sure if Salisbury’s going to be one of the locations for a Hollywood movie.

Town Manager Neil Harrington said he received a call recently from a location scout inquiring about the possibility of shooting parts of a movie in town. The movie, Harrington said, would star Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington.

Harrington told the Board of Selectmen that no decisions have been made yet. If Salisbury does makes the cut, selectmen will need to give approval, which should happen by their next meeting. The board members would need to agree if the production company crews intend to close off streets or areas of town to film scenes, Harrington said.

But, Harrington added, he knows from experience that film crews can be a financial boon to the community and its business sector.

Although Harrington didn’t know the name of the movie, according to Salisbury resident Darlene Sweeney, it sounds like a movie currently in the works called, “The Equalizer.” Sweeney, owner of WSM Talent Agency, said if so, the movie is a remake of a popular television series from the 1980s, which starred the late British actor Edward Woodward.

From what Sweeney found, “The Equalizer’s” plot revolves around a veteran covert operative who quits a CIA-like agency and seeks redemption for his former dark deeds by helping people out of bad situations. The former spy places classified ads that read: “Got a problem? Odds against you? Call the Equalizer.”

Sweeney said movie location scouts often review a number of places that fit the script’s specifications before decisions are made by the production company on where to go. If Salisbury is chosen and selectmen approve, she added, there could be opportunities for local residents to take part in various ways, from providing food, lodging, materials and services, to filling in as movie extras.
