Port educator named principal at Newbury school

NEWBURY — Beth Yando will take the helm at Newbury Elementary School July 1.

Yando, who lives in Newburyport, will replace Michael Tracy who leaves the post at the end of the school year to become a middle school principal in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Her salary for the 2013 - 2014 school year is $103,000.

Triton Regional School District superintendent Christopher Farmer called Yando “passionate about her profession” and said that she is “committed to the belief that all children can learn if they are engaged in the most appropriate way.”

He went on to say that Yando was highly regarded by the previous superintendents for whom she has worked and “came through to head the list” of the six sitting principals interviewed for the position.

Selection committees made up of parents, staff and administrators used a job description created by Farmer to review applications, conduct first round interviews and select finalists — who were then interviewed by a smaller panel that included Farmer.

For the past three years Yando has led the Dolbeare Elementary School in Wakefield, a school serving 450 students in grades prekindergarten through 4. Newbury Elementary School has about 600 students and 85 staff members.

Yando has also worked as a math instructional support specialist and assistant to the director of curriculum at the Harry Lee Cole and Spofford Pond Schools in Boxford. From 1990 to 2004, Yando taught grades 1 through grade 3 at Morristown Elementary School in Vermont.

Yando graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Johnson State College, and earned a master’s of education degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Vermont. In October 1997 she won an “Outstanding Vermont Teacher” award.

“Beth Yando will help Newbury Elementary School build on its high reputation, and make a telling contribution to the district’s leadership team,” Farmer said.
