This Day in History

On this day in 1838, Col. Charles Leonard Ayers was born in Portsmouth, N.H., though he soon moved to Newburyport with his widowed mother. He is known for his distinguished military service as second lieutenant in the Third Unattached Company that defended Fort Pickering and Fort Lee, both in Salem. He also became the keeper at the jail on the Mall.
