WEST NEWBURY — Just as they have for the past nine years, alumni artists of Pentucket Regional High School are again holding a fine and performing arts festival on Friday to benefit the district’s arts program.
Held every year on the first Friday in January, AlumNight features a visual arts exhibit at 6:30 p.m. with the theatrical and musical performances on stage starting at 7 p.m.
The affable Cathy Thomas, Class of 2003, will again emcee the entertainment portion of AlumNight, which typically includes students who have graduated from Pentucket returning to their alma mater to sing musical theater, play instrumental and percussion pieces, and act in theatrical and comedic monologues.
Thomas, whose playful AlumNight banter is always a highlight of the evening, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in theatre studies from Marymount Manhattan College in New York City. She currently sings and plays the organ for the indie rock band Boy Girl Party in Brooklyn, N.Y., but returns to her native Groveland each January to host AlumNight.
Pentucket Visual Arts teacher and alumnus Sean Bixby is organizing contributions from Pentucket’s alumni visual artists in the AlumNight gallery exhibit. A magna cum laude graduate of the Hartford Art School and resident of Merrimac, Bixby teaches basic design and drawing classes at the high school and is a professional children’s book illustrator. His first picture book, “The Uncrossable Canyon,” earned him a silver medal from the Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards. A second picture book illustrated by Bixby is due out early in the New Year.
Hosted by the nonprofit Pentucket Arts Foundation, AlumNight is a family-friendly event offered to the community each year as a way to relax after the holiday rush and celebrate the arts at Pentucket. Due to ongoing renovations in the high school auditorium, this year’s AlumNight will be held next door in the Pentucket Middle School auditorium. General admission is $10, with students and seniors paying $8. All proceeds benefit arts education and programming for the Pentucket Schools. A “Dinner and a Show” raffle to benefit Pentucket arts will be held as well.
