Sheriff's youth leadership academy receives award

Newburyport Daily News

---- — MIDDLETON — The Essex County Sheriff’s Department recently received the National High Impact Drug Trafficking Area Award for outstanding effort, in collaboration with the New England High Impact Drug Trafficking Area.

Through a grant from HIDTA, and in conjunction with Project Adventure, the Sheriff’s Department held youth academies for youth ages 12 to 15 years of age, and the Junior Leadership Academy for children 8 to 11 years of age. Offered free of charge, both programs served 565 children from Essex County last year.

Essex County Sheriff Frank G. Cousins Jr. cited the work of the department’s employees as a key to the program’s success, saying in a press release, “We feel it is important to serve all citizens of Essex County, but we have a very special responsibility to our young people. Our Leadership Academies allow us to promote a healthy lifestyle for local children.”
