This Day in History

On this day in 1849, the brig Charlotte with William G. Bartlett, master, sailed from Newburyport for San Francisco with 45 passengers. The excitement that followed the discovery of gold in California led to the charter of several Merrimack River-built ships for the Pacific coast.
