Group directs focus at rising sea level

NEWBURYPORT — A local group concerned about environmental issues is so new it doesn’t have a name, only a cause: dealing with the apparent rise of the sea.

Close to a score of concerned citizens met last week at the Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center to discuss this issue, organizers say.

A steering committee is tentatively slated to meet Thursday at 7 p.m. at Caffe di Siena on Pleasant Street here to develop plans for another meeting.

“It’s early and it is anticipated that leaders will emerge after a few sessions are held,” said Ron Martino, an environmentalist who recently served as an organizer with the group Solarize Newburyport, which helped bring solar power to more than three dozen residences and businesses.

A statement from a panel known as the Sea Rising Initiating Team said of the recent meeting at Joppa, “Everyone of you whom we’ve heard from was excited to meet others like yourself in the Greater Newburyport area to begin to address this real and urgent issue of sea rise on our Seacoast.”

More details will be available in the near future, Martino said.
