---- — SEABROOK — Within three hours of the official start of the election season yesterday, three candidates — including the incumbent — have emerged to run for selectman in March.
Yesterday was the first day candidates could sign up to run on the 2013 town ballot.
According to Town Clerk Bonnie Fowler, Paula Wood and Maria Brown were the first to file to run for the one available seat on the three-member Board of Selectmen, signing up by about 10 a.m.
Shortly after that, incumbent Selectman Brendan Kelly said he’s also in the race.
“Of course I’m running again,” Kelly said yesterday morning. “I’m going to sign up as soon as I get to Town Hall today.”
Wood is a longtime elected member of the town Budget Committee and is also serving as an alternate on the Planning Board.
Brown has served for years on the Winnacunnet School Board and ran for the office of selectman unsuccessfully last year.
Kelly will be seeking his third, three-year term on the board.
Although many expect him to toss his hat in the ring again, Robie Beckman, a runner-up last year in the selectman’s race, has decided not to run this year.
The deadline for candidates for any town office to sign up is Friday, Feb. 1, at 5 p.m. at the town clerk’s office in Town Hall. The election is Tuesday, March 12.
Other available offices holding three-year terms are two seats on the Planning Board, one seat on the Trust Fund, two Budget Committee seats and one Board of Library Trustees seat.
Two-year terms are available on the Planning Board and as town moderator.
To be elected for one-year terms are three town constables and one Budget Committee member. And a member of the Supervisor of the Check-list will be elected for a five-year term.
In addition, the town will elect one member to the five-member Seabrook School Board for a three-year term. Candidates seeking election in the Seabrook School District must also file papers by Friday, Feb. 1, according to School District Clerk Elizabeth Ross.
Candidates may file with Ross at Seabrook Elementary School between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by calling Ross at 603-474-3822 or 603-474-2715 for an appointment.
