Church group restores Macy Terrace playground

AMESBURY — Members of Main Street Congregational Church rolled up their sleeves Saturday and gave the children at Macy Terrace public housing complex something they've been wanting for a long time: a new and improved playground.

About 20 members of the church spent six hours installing a new swing set, repairing the old set, sprucing up the place and clearing out a lot of brush from the playground.

They also received some help.

"Five to six kids helped us rake pea stone and paint the donated swing set, pull weeds," said Stacy Lamson, co-chairwoman of the church's Board of Fellowship. "They did a great job."

Workers of Amesbury Housing Authority also worked on the site prior to Saturday.

The housing authority recommended the playground for improvements not only because of the swing set's condition but because of the number of children who live in the complex, Lamson said.

She said 40 to 60 kids call Macy Terrace, on Route 110, home.

Lamson, a 17-year member of the downtown church, saw just how many kids were in need of a swing set when she visited the playground, and there were kids already playing on the slide and ladder and in the empty sandbox.

Home Depot donated some supplies, and the church used $500 of its money for the project. The new swing set was donated by a neighbor of Sue O'Hala, who is the board co-chairwoman.
