WEST NEWBURY — The Board of Health will hold its annual household hazardous waste collection on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. The event, which takes place rain or shine, will be held at the Newburyport Department of Public Works on Perry Way, located off Low Street in Newburyport. Several items may be dropped off free of charge, including cell phones, thermometers, thermostats, car batteries and rechargeable NiCad batteries under 2 pounds.
The following items may be dropped off for a fee, with payment made only by cash or a check written out to: Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. (Bring two checks, for vendors.) Participants are reminded to leave items in original containers with lids tightened, and to never mix chemicals or smoke during drop-off.
Up to 10 gallons or 10 pounds for $28, up to 25 gallons or 25 pounds for $45: lighter fluid, moth balls, paint strippers and thinners, solvent adhesives, oil-based paint, stains and varnishes, fuels, kerosene, gasoline and motor oil, transmission fluid, engine degreaser, anti-freeze, brake fluid, carburetor cleaner, car wax and polishes, driveway sealer, roofing tar, swimming pool chemicals, poisons, insecticides and fungicides, chemical fertilizers, weed killer, flea control products, wood preservatives, rubber cement, airplane glue, photo chemicals, artists' supplies, fiberglass resins, floor and metal polish, chemistry sets, oven cleaners, rug and upholstery cleaners and drain and toilet cleaners.
Anyone interested in dropping off the following items may pay with cash or checks payable to the city of Newburyport: tires ($2), truck tires ($5), microwaves ($1), 20-pound empty propane tanks ($2), one pound propane tanks ($1), computers — monitors only ($15), air conditioners ($10), dehumidifiers ($10), refrigerators — door removed ($15), helium tanks ($5), televisions under 25 inches ($10), televisions over 25 inches ($20), fluorescent light bulbs — CFL ($.50), fluorescent tubes ($1), copiers ($25) and water tanks ($5).
The following items are not eligible for collection: latex paint, trash, commercial or industrial waste, smoke detectors, infectious and biological waste, fire extinguishers, prescription medicines and syringes, asbestos, appliances, radioactive waste, ammunition, fireworks and explosives.
