NEWBURYPORT — The Global Awareness Club at Newburyport High School will hold a fundraiser to benefit children at the Mancona School in Ghana on Tuesday from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Flatbread Co., 5 Market Square, Amesbury. The funds will assist with improvements to buildings, school supplies and to aid teachers.
"(The school has) purchased books and I have seen pictures of the school through email and it's kind of cool to get an email from Ghana. To see some of the pictures, I cannot even recognize the school," said Newburyport High School senior Mackenzie Kelleher, who spent three weeks volunteering there two years ago.
The event will feature a silent auction, a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses and donations of $3.50 for every large and $1.75 for every small pizza sold at Flatbread.
Kelleher, 18, founded the club in 2009 because of a community service trip she took during her sophomore year with Global Leadership Adventures, a program for high school students around the world.
"I wanted to start trying to raise money for (GAC) because three weeks of community service just didn't really seem like enough to me," said Kelleher.
During her trip, she volunteered at the Mancona School; on her arrival back in the States, she decided to create her own club, which, along with other club members and teacher Mrs. Greenstein, has raised more than $2,000.
Since the start of GAC, the club has held fundraisers at various locations such as Oregano Pizzeria & Ristorante in Newburyport, where more than $400 was raised.
After Kelleher graduates, she will continue her education at Babson College in Wellesley. NHS Junior Klaudia Smolarek will take Kelleher's place leading the club.
Stop by Flatbread with family and friends to support the GAC in their efforts to raise money for the children of Mancona School.
