PLUM ISLAND - Residents on the city's end of the Plum Island who own multi-unit or multi-family homes are organizing a letter-writing campaign in an effort to reduce their share of the costs of the water and sewer project, which they say is so out of proportion to what single-family homes pay that it's left some of them uncertain about their future on the island.
Diane Burns and Mary Anne Padellaro both own multi-family properties on the island and are facing a financial crunch, unable to afford the betterment fees that came with the water and sewer installation. Padellaro has even had to move her family into one of the units she previously rented out in order to be able to afford the new fees, Burns said.
