You've heard of horse races, but have you heard of pig races? Last Friday, the Salisbury Elementary School PTA hosted the first annual pig races. Each classroom that had 60 percent student participation in the 2007 Meadow Farms Fall fundraiser got one battery-operated pig to enter into the race.
There was also a second competition that allowed each classroom another opportunity to win a motorized pig. This competition gave each classroom 30 days to bring in new PTA membership forms. The classrooms that went past the field goal on the school's front entrance bulletin board, designed by PTA secretary Stacy Johnson, won a pig and were entered into the race.
There were a total of 12 pigs competing in the races held in the school's gymnasium. The event began with a beauty pageant with each pig dressed in its best. Judges of this unique pageant included Steve O'Brien of Meadow Farms Fundraising; Anne O'Brien, SES librarian; Shannon O'Brien, the school's art teacher; and technology teacher Brendan Stokes.
In the beauty contest, first place went to Julianne Aston's third-grade classroom and its mascot dressed in baseball attire. The PTA officers won second place with their bikini-clad pig, and third place went to the front office, which dressed its pig as a baby.
Once the beauty contest ended, it was off to the races. The pig to cross the finish line and claim first place belonged to Bethany Marshall's second-grade class; second place went to Deborah Dennahy's second-grade class; and coming in third was Ruth Landreth's third-grade class. Prizes awarded included a pizza party, an ice cream sundae party, and a movie and popcorn party.

The Special Education Parent Advisory Council will hosting its next meeting on Tuesday at the Triton High School Library. The meeting begins at 7 p.m., and all those with a child on an Individualized Education Plan are welcome to attend. The "Pot of Gold" March Cash calendars are back. Those who purchase a calendar will have a chance to win prizes ranging from $50 to $500. Drawings will be held daily with 31 chances to win. Every Friday will be worth $100, and on St. Patrick's Day, one lucky winner will get a pot of gold worth $500. All of the rest of the days there will be a prize of $50. Cash calendars are only a $10 donation to the PTA. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go toward Camp Sargent, which is a weeklong environmental camp sixth-graders go to each year.

Kindergarten information night will be held Thursday at the school. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. in the school library.
